How to Survive a Roadtrip with Babies and Toddlers: 5 Must-Know Tips

Can’t decide if you should fly or drive to your next magical vacation? The cost of flights can be overwhelming, especially for families with more than one kiddo, and driving can be a great way to save some money and make memories along the way!

Can’t decide if you should fly or drive to your next magical vacation? The cost of flights can be overwhelming, especially for families with more than one kiddo, and driving can be a great way to save some money and make memories along the way!

Here are some of our favorite Disney road trip tips for families with babies, toddlers, and nursing mamas:

1. Keep Your Driving Window to 6-8 Hours Per Day

Little ones get restless (and honestly, so do we!). It’s best to break the drive into manageable chunks. Driving for too long or even overnight can lead to overtired parents and cranky kids. Your Disney vacation will be full of active and long days, make your travel down a little easier on yourself and space out your trip into multiple days or chunks!

*Pro tip: Plan a fun overnight stop halfway – pick a hotel with a great pool or splash area so everyone can unwind and enjoy some fun before hitting the road again!

2. Make the Drive Part of the Adventure

We love turning our drive into a little mini vacation. Not only does this make the drive feel like it is taking less time, but it also keeps your kiddos engaged and excited throughout the trip. We like to stop at playgrounds, quirky roadside attractions, unique shops, and even McDonald’s with play places are a great way to burn some energy! If McDonald’s isn‘t quite your speed, there are tons of small indoor playgrounds you can stop at along the way, these are great for younger toddlers as they usually have dedicated baby/young toddler sections.

*Pro Tip: Type your path into chat GPT and ask it to provide some kid friendly stops along the way.

3. Strategically Pack Your Bags

Not only do you want to make sure you have all of your roadtrip essentials organized so you can find what you are looking for, but you also want to make sure you have them in an easy to reach place! I like to rotate activities as we go and having these in dedicated organized bags can really help ease the burden of looking as we are driving. Have a bag for sweets, salty, and other snacks that your kids will want during the drive. Have another bag with toys that you can rotate out throughout your journey. Start with coloring books, then move to window toys, and so on and so forth!

*Pro tip- depending on the age of your kiddos, taking them to the store before you travel and letting them pick out 1-2 snacks for the roadtrip can make traveling a lot more fun for them!

4. Nursing and Pumping on the Go

If you are breastfeeding, do not stress, you can easily nurse at gas stations, rest stops, or when you pull over for breaks. I actually like traveling with littles because it forces us to take breaks more frequently, stretch and get out of the car for a little bit longer. However, if you are a little more pressed for time, pumping can be a great option as well. I always bring a cooler bag to store my portable pumps and any excess milk I may pump. Having a bottle or two can make your stops easier and faster so that one person can feed baby while you stretch, get a snack, or use the bathroom!

*Pro tip- bring a Ceres Chill with you for long rides. You can pump directly into it, it will keep your milk cool the whole time, and you can even feed baby from it if you have the right pieces! It makes bottles and pumping so much easier on car rides. You code “magicalmamas” for a special discount.

5. Time Your Arrival for Extra Disney Magic

If you can, try to plan your arrival so you reach your resort earlier in the day. You will have access to all the resort amenities the entire day, so even if your room is not ready, you can take a swim, splash in the splash pad, explore your resort, or even play at the playground!

*Pro Tip- Schedule a Character meal dinner for your arrival day. This is the perfect way to get your Disney vacation started and end a long travel journey!

You got this!

We all know how stressful just getting to your destination can be, but just know you got this! Driving with those tiny humans definitely takes a little bit more planning, but with the right prep, and a little bit of grace, you’ll be amazed at how smoothly it can go… and if it doesn’t that’s okay too! We have all been there!
